steve smith and vital information nyc edition - heart of the city

Drummer legend Steve Smith returns as a band leader with his all-star group Vital Information NYC Edition - Baron Browne (bass/vocals), Mark Soskin (piano), Vinny Valentino (guitar) - to release a brand new full-length studio recording, Heart Of The City. This astounding album features familiar standards as well as original compositions written by members of Vital Information NYC Edition.

Why a combination of originals and standards? With Vital Information NYC Edition every member of the group is an outstanding jazz improviser. The common connection between all jazz musicians is the shared training and proving-ground of developing a repertoire of standards and demonstrating their skill-set on familiar material. If a jazz musician only plays their own compositions it become difficult, or impossible, to truly assess their abilities as jazz players because they are not allowing their strengths and limitations to be on display; They are only playing to their strengths. Being creative with familiar material is a time-proven method of expressing a contemporary commentary, using personalized ideas, based on compositions that have stood the test of time. This album showcases the timelessness of the jazz standards and adds a cherry on top with inspired original material.
